Old Fashioned Week Inspires Rhum Agricole Options in US

By Friday, November 10, 2017

This year the U.S joins in on the global celebration of the king of all cocktails, the Old Fashioned. From November 2nd – 11th 775 venues around the globe will be toasting variations of the Old Fashioned.  Thanks to Old Fashioned Week 2017, bars across the United States have been inspired to partner up with Rhum J.M to create their own riffs on the Old Fashioned with Rhum Agricole.

San Francisco, CA: In SF’s Tenderloin district, Rum & Sugar Bar is serving up a large selection of rum and cocktails in a laid-back atmosphere.  Head bartender Robert Bertz is showcasing Rhum J.M Gold in the BDOF.  The Rhum is mixed with a bit of whisky, sweetened with crème de peche and finished with Angostura bitters for a drink with a perky personality.

Santa Fe, NM: Bar Alto, the craft cocktail bar on the roof of the Drury Plaza hotel, has something more going for it than the view with their OFW drink, Dick Whitman. Mad Men fans will recognize this as a reference to Don Draper’s birth name, before he took on the identity of a fallen fellow soldier to make a break from his old life.  Bar Alto’s drink also makes a break from the usual, with a Rhum J.M VO Old Fashioned that includes Fernet Branca and China China.

Austin, TX: With a focus on hospitality, quality products and stylish décor, Backbeat settles comfortably into Austin’s hopping food and drinks scene. Slip up to their rooftop patio for views of the city or chill in the swanky inner bar while you sipping on their OFW special, Golden Era.  Backbeat kept things classic and classy with a slight twist on the traditional Old Fashioned using Rhum J.M Gold, Velvet Falernum and Angostura Orange Bitters.

Boston, MA: Since 2011, The Hawthorne has been bringing superior craft cocktails to the Boston drinks scene and their OFW drink special is no exception.  Their Antillean Old Fashioned uses a base of Rhum J.M VO, 3 different kinds of bitters, plus shrub, lime juice and simple syrup. There is a lot going on here, but rhum agricole has enough character to shine through and bring tie all together.

New York City, NY: Tucked away in a cellar space below the Chelsea Market, The Tippler serves up a combo of serious cocktails and NYC history with décor including repurposed train rails from the High Line and water tower wood. It’s not just their decorations that are inspired by “keeping it local” but also their products as they celebrate nearby producers as much as possible. For OFW, they keep it simple with a classic Old Fashioned – one made with whisky and one made with J.M Rhum.  Try them side by side to get a true feel for the classic versus the Rhum Agricole.
